Entrance Gates?

We are discussing entrance gates, we are open 24 hrs, with rangers after the office closes. We have reservation and drive-in arrivals. The gate area is about 1/8 miles from the park office, and the gate would be unattended.
Can we do it ourselves?
What type of gates, operators, and communication should we have?
Any idea on the cost?

Gates can be used for controlled access in and free or controlled access out. (Free exits are best to use spike strips as they are less maintenance.)
Gates are rated by how many openings a day you anticipate, so that factors into pricing.
You'll need an access controller to program and retire gate codes.
You'll need keypads to actuate the gate. (High for RV and Low for car/Bike.)
You'll need sensor loops to keep it open while a vehicle is under it.
You'll need 110v electricity to the gate.
You'll need wiring between all these points.
You'll need a concrete footing to install the gate on and underground pipes for the wires.
You'll need to maintain it.
You'll need to put the arm back on when they drive thru it - LOL - Its made to break away but they will drive thru it.

You can also use remotes or RF technology to open the gates for staff.

Can we do it ourselves? Maybe but theres really alot to it. It really needs to be done right as these gates can kill and do major property damage if not installed and programmed correctly.

We use Elite Access Controllers (Chamberlain) for our gates. Our gates are connected to a telephone line so when someone arrives late at night, they dial '001' and it rings to the office or the night roll over number. From there, we can get information, tell them which site to head to and press '9' to open the gate for them.

We deal with a lot of "Snowbirds" and the keypad gets difficult for them to see, so this year we are adding a 'Proximity Card' reader that we can issue (for $5) to those with extended stays and they can just wave their way in from 18" away. We also use garage door openers but the system can only handle about 75 of those codes so for a 350 site property, it's insufficient.
